How can I connect to SQL Server 2005 analysis services server programmatically?

Hi, all here,

Would please anyone here give me any idea about how can I connect to SQL Server 2005 analysis services server and send XML request to it programmatically (with Business intelligence development studio in SQL Server 2005)? Thanks a lot.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

That's a big topic - you can start here

How can I configure Report Services to show different set of Rendering Extension Per Repor

Hi There,
I'd like to configure the report services rendering extension on a per
report application basis. for example, if i have two report packages
named Package A and Package B, and I'd like to show only "PDF" as the
only export option for Package A, and "Excel" only for Package B. Is
there anyway to achieve this? changing the RSReportServer.config will
affect all report applications on the same server.
Regards,
KevinNo way to do this. Only way would be to have your own application instead of
using Report Manager.

Is that doable in SQL 2005?|||I don't think so but I don't know for sure.
One thing you could do is disable all export and then on your report have a
link at the top that exports to the format that you want.

How can I check the version of reporting services installed?

Hi, all here,

Would anyone here please guide me how can I check the version of reporting services installed? My problem is in my virtual machine, both SQL Server and SQL Server 2005 are installed, but I can create report in the vistual studio 2005 IDE, but cant deploy it to the reporting server database, in addition, I cant connect to reporting services database in SQL Server 2005 management studio.

Is it possible to install two different versions of reporting services in the same virtual machine? Please anyone here give me some advice for that. Thanks a lot.

With best regards,

Run the site http://localhost/reportserver you will find the version number somewhere on the site indicating that 8.x is 2k and 9.x is 2k5.

How can i back-up my database in production environment.

I developed an asp.net application in visual web developer 2005 express edition and SQL sever 2005 express with Advanced services. The application has been deployed and iam wondering what tools are availabel to for backing up my data. Are there any tools i can use to back-up my database. Iam not talking of third party tools but tools a vailable in sql sever 2005 express with advanced services or visual web developer express.

OR can write a vb.net Sub procedure that i run and have my database backed up. If so where can i start or what other options may i explorer.

Hi Dear,

you can backup your datbase by usingMicrosoft SQL Server Management Studio and also by ur VB.NET application

i will try to explain you both ways.

1:By using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

Open Management Studio and Right Click On Your Database and go to the Tasks->Backup menu item, Backup Database Dialogbox will be open.

Click Add button in Destination Panel, and choose the Destination File. and simply press OK ( This is the simplest way, but you can customize your backup by choosing different options available on Backup Database Dialog)

2. By VB.NET Application

execute following TSQL statement in your SQL Server

USE

master

EXEC

sp_addumpdevice'disk','MyDataBaseBackup','c:\YourDatabaseBackupDirectory\MyDBBackup.dat'

' and then use following code in your application

' VB.NET Code

Dim conAsNew SqlConnection("ConnectionString")Dim comAsNew SqlCommand("BACKUP DATABASE YourDataBaseName TO MyDataBaseBackup")

com.Connection = con

com.Connection.Open()

com.ExecuteNonQuery()

com.Connection.Close()

Thanks

Regards,

Muhammad Akhtar Shiekh

Oh thanks very much Akhtar,

I want to take on and understand thoroughly the second option(vb.net option) as its looks to be more flexible though a bit complicated. Looks like i have to start with stored procedures, isn't. Please would you point me to a tutorial from microsoft to get me started with the core basics of backingup a database using this approach.

Thanks very much.

|||Check out the BACKUP statement in Books On Line. You might want to schedule it as a job and include it in your weekly maintenance window (if you dont already have one, time to create one) rather than create a VB application for it.|||

The problem all starts with version of sql sever one is using. some of the documentation do not apply to the express version of sql sever so you find your self wasting valuable time reading an article that you later find out does not apply to the product version your running. Iam running sql sever 2005 express edition with advanced sevices in my case.

How are transactions managed for web services

Hi,
How are transactions managed when publishing stored procedures as web
services? Does SQLXML automatically commit the transaction if the stored
procedure succeeded and rollback if it failed?
Thanks.

Hello McGeeky,

For SQL Server 2005 using SOAP endpoints: Nope. Layering a Web Service on
top of a stored proc doesn't change how the stored proc behaves, you still
need to manage the transactions correctly and internally to your own code.
The new TRY-CATCH syntax makes that easier, of course.

How Analysis Services Server select the storage location for any object of within an analysis se

Hi, all experts here,

Thank you very much for your kind attention.

Could please any of you kindly advise me how can we find the storage locations of partitions of a cube from its code? (.xml file). Thanks a lot in advance and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly for your advices and help.

With best regards,

Hi, all experts here,

I am just a bit confused about the storage location of the objects of an analysis services database. It does not seem like it stores all the objects within the same folder the very first time when we created the analysis services database project from BI studio, since I created the project in a folder which is different from the folder where the dimensions files of a cube are stored? How it works? Please shed me some light on it and I am really looking forward to hearing from you for your kind advices.

Thanks a lot in advance.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

The folder created by the BIDS project simply contains metadata files. When you deploy, process, or what not in BIDS, those metadata files are used to compile scripts that are submitted to Analysis Services. Analysis Services constructs its objects within its data folder. The root data folder can be found by openning SQL Server Management Studio, connecting to an instance of SSAS, right-clicking the SSAS instance object, and selecting Properties from the context menu. On the dialog to pops up, look for the DataDir entry.

How a parent report access datafields in its subreport

I am converting a crystal report to SQL Server Reporting Services report. In my crystal report copy, I have a parent report which will pass three parameters to a subreport (the subreport will use the params to retrieve data from database), then the parent report needs to access a calculated data field in its subreport. How can I do this using SQL Server Reporting Services? The subreport doesn't share data with its parent in SQL Server Reporting Services, right? Thanks.

I've never tried to do this and it sounds pretty complicated. But I wonder if you code put code into the Code tab of the sub report, something like:

Public Function GetValue() As String
Return First(Fields!MyField.Value, "MyQueryName")
End Function

And then from the parent call:

MySubReport.Code.GetValue()

--------------------

This could be a terrible idea but if you're completely stuck it could be worth a shot.

Hotfix from KB821334

What happened to the hotfix required by Reporting Services for SQL Server
2000 SP3a? It looks like you have to contact PSS to get any hotfixes
anymore. Does that mean anyone new to Reporting Services has to contact PSS
just to be able to install Reporting Services?Well, that's what we had to do.

(which means almost everybody needs it). I'll ask this in the SQL Server MVP
forum and see what is up and provide the answer on this thread.

been updated to refer to SP4 (which would have this hotfix rolled up in it).
So could be that SP4 will be soon and that would be what people would apply
instead of the hotfix. For now, contacting PSS seems to be the only route to
take.

Hot Fix 821334

Hi All,
I tryed installing Reporting Services for sql 2000 and wanted to use the
service account for install. During process I was told

fix? Also I read that this fix causes Enterprise Manager not to function, is
this correct?
Thanks,
JJYou can find the fix on MS website.
Do a search for it via the fix number... its around 11MB. If you cant find
it, i can send it to you.
It wont break EM. Well atleast not on my 3 servers that I have installed the

Hosting Options

Hello,

I have been attempting to locate a hosting company that offers SQL Server 2005 in addition to Analysis & Reporting Services but have been unable to find a hosting company which does so without purchasing the entire server. Anyone know of a company?

Thanks in Advance,

Garrett

You can get linked to a bunch of hosters offering SQL Server 2005 at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56258. It won't call out if they offer Analysis & Reporting Services, so you'll need to click through and check. I would be interested in hearing more about what you're intending to host...

Thanks< MJ

Hosting Companies

My company is interested in using Reporting Services but doesn't yet want to
commit to their own servers. Does anyone know of any hosting companies
offering hosting of SQL Server Reporting Services? So far, I can only find
one - discountasp.net and I'd like some more alternatives.infosaic.com
They are installing it this week. Sales may not be familiar with it as yet
so contact Garry Vershinin in tech support.
I have been hosting with them for three years now and am very happy with
their service and tech support.
