How can I consume webservices on SQL 2005

Hi,
I'd like know if can I build ( and how can do ) a store procedore on MS
SQL 2005 to access a remote webservices, process it and return the result to
my client ?
Thanks,

Hello Solli,

Yes.
The real trick is that you need to add build step that generates a static
proxy class. Do that by adding this as a Post-build Event Step in your SqlClr
project:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Bin\sgen.exe" /force
"$(TargetPath)"
Note that you cannot use Visual Studio to deploy all of the needed assemblies.
You'll need to fire up SSMS or like and issue these commands:
use ...whatever database you like...
go
create assembly ...what you want to call your assembly...
from ...where the DLL is on your disk...
with permission_set = external_access
go
create assembly [...whatever your project name is... .XmlSerializers]
from '...where the DLL is on your disk...\SqlServerProject1.XmlSerializers.dll'
go
create procedure ...whatever you want to call the procedure...(...list of
parameters, if any...)
as external name Assembly Name.[fully qualified class name]. ...name of method...
go
exec ...whatever you called the procedure...
go
The guts of my stored procedure looks like:
[Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure]
public static void WebMath(SqlInt32 x,SqlInt32 y)
{
SqlMetaData[] cols = new SqlMetaData[1];
cols[0] = new SqlMetaData("Result", SqlDbType.Int);
SqlDataRecord rec = new SqlDataRecord(cols);
using (SqlServerProject1.ws1proxy.ws1 proxy = new SqlServerProject1.ws1proxy.ws1())
{
rec.SetInt32(0, proxy.AddTwo(x.Value, y.Value));
SqlContext.Pipe.Send(rec);
}
}
The Web Service in question looks like:
public int AddTwo(int x,int y) {
return(x+y);
}

How can I change the table schema?

I have perform merge replication in the SQL server with access database,
however I would like to change the database schema in the SQL server. How
can I do that? e.g. such as adding a field in the table or changing the data
type of the column field.
Thank you

Jabba
use sp_repladdcolumn or sp_repldropcolumn. You can also right click on your
publication, select publication properties, go to Fitler Columns and add
your columns there.

What I would like to know, is how to specify an Excel file ( e.g MyFile.xls) that should appear in the control when the page is opened. I have tried with the properties available on the control, but with no luck.

How can I access SQL server from SCO Unix?

We are running SCO Unix 5.0.5. We need a command line sql client that can connect to a MS SQL server running on a windows server. Can someone point me in the right direction? I don't want to write a sql client. I just want a command line sql client binary that is ready to work.

I want to do something like this in a unix shell script:

# sql -s 10.1.2.3 -u username -p password -f sqlcommandsinafile.txt -o sqlresults.txt

Any help would be appreciated....

I am not aware of such a cmd line tool on unix. To achieve what you want, you would need to get a hold of a 3rd party unix ODBC driver for SQL server. There is an odbcsql sample that ships with MDAC SDK, you can download the sample and port it to run on Unix.

Hope this helps.

How can I access SQL Server Compact Edition with SQL Server Management Studio Express?

Hello,

I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application. The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases.

To try to connect, I run Management Studio and bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog. Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect.

To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi". This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.1\".

Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation?

Might I need an upgrade to some other components? My Management Studio Version is:

- Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.2047.00

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thank you,

WTW

The support for SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition was added in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE). SSMSE is available for download at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C243A5AE-4BD1-4E3D-94B8-5A0F62BF7796&displaylang=en

SSMSE shipped with SQL Server 2005 SP2. SQL Server 2005 SP2 information is at

WTW,

I've written a blog post about this, you can see it at http://arcanecode.wordpress.com/2007/04/11/create-a-sql-server-compact-edition-database-using-sql-server-2005-management-studio/ . I've also written an article that describes all the components you'll want to install to make everything work right, http://arcanecode.wordpress.com/2007/04/24/sql-server-2005-compact-edition-important-component/ .

You might also want to check the Arcane Lessons page for more SSCE tutorials.

Thanks for your reply. I uninstalled SSMSE and downloaded and installed it again. However, I still cannot access a SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition database.

When I bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog, the "Server Type" is fixed at "Database Engine", and I cannot determine how to change it. I've tried most of the menus and buttons, and I cannot find a setting for this.

I am missing some other component or configuration option?

Thanks for your help.

WTW

|||

Thanks for your very helpful reply. Thanks to your blog, I now have all of the proper components installed to make Compact Edition work properly. Your blog was the only place where I have found a complete list of all of the necessary components.

I have even purchased the E-book that you recommended, and it is very helpful.

However, I still am not able to access a Compact Edition database through SQL Server Management Studio Express. When I bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog, the "Server Type" is fixed at "Database Engine", and I cannot determine how to change it to Compact Edition or something similar.

The E-book demonstrates how to access a Compact Edition database through Management Studio. However, it shows a "Connect" menu in Management Studio that does not exist on my version. According to the E-book screen shots, the "Connect" menu should allow you to select "SQL Server Mobile", which will then bring up a "Connect to Server" dialog that shows a "Server Type" of "SQL Server Mobile". The next line allows selection of a "Database file" instead of a "Server name".

My version of Management Studio does not have the "Connect" menu. I even tried reinstalling Management Studio from the Microsoft website. However, I discovered that I already had the latest version, 9.00.2047.00.

I would appreciate any additional help you can provide.

Regards,

WTW

|||In typical microsoft style, the documentation is horrible on this. I was only able to get it to work by installing SP2 of SSMSE (of which there is no mention on the regular SSMSE download page) at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6053C6F8-82C8-479C-B25B-9ACA13141C9E&displaylang=en

and the SQL CE SDK found at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E9AA3F8D-363D-49F3-AE89-64E1D149E09B&displaylang=en

You will know you have SP2 of SSMSE installed if you version is 9.00.3042.00

SP2 did the trick. Thank you so much.

How can i access internal row id of sql server

Please mail me the solution at khaleek_ahmad@.yahoo.com.> How can i access internal row id of sql server
What makes you think there is an internal row number in SQL? The key point
is a table is by definition an unordered set of rows. Retrieving a row by
ordinal position implies ordering and there are other issues as well. What
is the underlying reason that you need to select individual rows by row
number?
>I want to access nth row from a table in sql server without use of

If you must retrieve data by ordinal position, one method create a server
cursor based on a SELECT...ORDER BY and retrieve individual rows using
FETCH...ABSOLUTE. This can technique can have performance implications with
large tables, though.

Hi ! Deepak Kapoor

I am a C# beginner, I have to write some code using windows application,that's need to INSERT,UPDATE,SELECT and DELETE data to sql server using ADO.net and .net remoting...

1.The client application include 1 dataGridView and 4 buttons(Add,Delete,Edit and Load).

2.The server application include 1label and 1 button to start server application.

3.The remote object.

Here are my questions. Big Smile

I already wrote for the Load button of the client application.But, I dont know how to program for the remaining buttons.And I want to access data directly into the dataGridView.If you know how to do,please post some explaination and give me some example code.

This is my remote object.

public class AuthorList : MarshalByRefObject

{

private static string connectionString = @."server = BMSTU\KTS ;database = kts;uid=sa;pwd=";

public DataTable GetAuthors()

{

string SQL = "SELECT * FROM Author";

// Create ADO.NET objects to execute the DB query.

SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(connectionString);

SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(SQL, conn);

SqlDataAdapter adapter = new SqlDataAdapter(cmd);

DataSet ds = new DataSet();

// Execute the command.

try

{

conn.Open();

adapter.Fill(ds, "Author");

}

catch (Exception err)

{

Console.WriteLine(err.ToString());

}

finally

{

conn.Close();

}

// Return the first DataTable in the DataSet to the caller.

return ds.Tables["Author"];

}

// This method allows you to verify that the object is running remotely.

public string GetHostLocation()

{

return AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName;

}

}

This is the Server application.

private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

{

HttpChannel myChannel = new HttpChannel(8080);

ChannelServices.RegisterChannel(myChannel);

RemotingConfiguration.RegisterWellKnownServiceType(typeof(BookServer.AuthorList),

"AuthorList", WellKnownObjectMode.Singleton);

label1.Text = "Server Started";

button1.Enabled = false;

}

This is the Client application

private void btnLoad_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

{

AuthorList atlst = (AuthorList)Activator.GetObject(typeof(AuthorList),

"http://localhost:8080/AuthorList", WellKnownObjectMode.Singleton);

dataGridView2.DataSource = null;

dataGridView2.DataSource = atlst.GetAuthors();

}

If you know how to program for the btnAdd,btnEdit and btnDelete of the Client application.And how to program in server and remote object.I am hoping anybody's help.

How and what to install

Hi,

My hosting cie sugested I upgrade from Access to SQL wich I did.

I downloaded the fullest version (trial) of SQL I could find, not knowing what I realy needed.

The Trial has now expired and when I try to install the "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services " it sais that I need to uninstall some stuff (the error message is trunckated).

My use for this is to connect to and manage my live database. And to have a local copy of this database on my devellopement and testing machine that I can play around with.

Since i've install this "big version", I find that i'm only using the "sql management studio".

But when I go "add or remove prgms", it says I use everything "Frequently"!
So I do not want to uninstall something that I realy am using "frequently"...

Here is what I have in that list:

SQL server 2005
SQL server 2005 backward compatibitity
SQL server 2005 books online
SQL server Native client
SQL server setup support files
SQL server VSS writer
Visual Studio 2005 premier partner edition -ENU

This takes up 1121.62 MB !

I do not see in this list the sql management studio...?

What do I need to uninstall to be able to install "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services "?

What else should I uninstall because I just would not need ?

When I do uninstall whatever I need to uninstall, and install this express version, will it remember my conections? Find my local database? Basicly, will it screw up anything?!?

Thank you for your help!

Dominique

You can install express as a named instance, which would mean you don't need to install the other version. However, if the other version has expired, then you should uninstall all of it, it's all supporting SQL Server, and you say that doesn't work anymore anyhow.

How access SqlServer from the Web

Hello:
I apologize my question involves some Web contents, but I don`t know where
expose it.
I have a local Sql Server database running under W2000 server. This machine
have permanent Internet access . Can I connect a Visual Basic program running
in a remote PC machine to the Sql Server Database, directly through the Web ?
I would appreciate any suggestion or reference to technical article.
My best regards.
Roberto
Yes, you can do that.
My recommendation is to use a VPN to the SQL Server rather than directly (if
possible) and lock down the IP address of the client machine on the server
firewall.
Alternatively you can open up the port that SQL Server listens on (incoming)
to the SQL Server machine and open all (outgoing) from the SQL Server
machine. I'd set SQL Server to use a different port other than the default
1433, say 2025 or something (on the server use the Netowkr Configuration
Utility in the SQL program group) - you can get the client to use that port
using the client config utility on the client.
Hope that helps.
Last but not least, get it on SQL Sp4.

How access SqlServer from the Web

Hello:
I apologize my question involves some Web contents, but I don`t know where
expose it.
I have a local Sql Server database running under W2000 server. This machine
have permanent Internet access . Can I connect a Visual Basic program runnin
g
in a remote PC machine to the Sql Server Database, directly through the Web
?
I would appreciate any suggestion or reference to technical article.
My best regards.
RobertoYes, you can do that.

How access 6.5 database using SQL 2005?

I just restored a database (.bak file) using SQL Server 2005. The database
now shows up but has "(6.5 Compatible)" next to it and no "+" next to it to
expand the tree, see tables, etc.
Any idea how I make this database accessible? I can do what I want with
it.. if I need to run an upgrade wizard or something, please let me know.
Thanks,
RonCheck out sp_dbcmptlevel in the BOL.

All it means is that the database is in compatibility-level mode 65. You
can still access it from the Query Editor and run queries against it. But
apparently you cannot connect to it from Object Browser.
To be able to do that, you can run:
EXEC sp_dbcmptlevel yourdb, 90
90 where means SQL 2005. You can also use 80 for SQL 2000 or 70 for
SQL 7. The one catch there is with chaning the compatinility level, is
that there may be stored procedures or triggers in the database that
relies on SQL 6.5 behaviour.
HAd the database actually been a 6.5 database, you would have been able to
restore the database at all.
